Online Effluent Monitoring at Paper Mill in South Africa

Scope
Supply of hardware and equipment for the Online Measurement and Monitoring of process operating parameters for the Effluent Treatment Plant; and the installation, commissioning, and calibration thereof
Problem
The site is currently discharging 400m3/hr into a municipal wastewater line. The client needed to know and understand the effluent quality at the different stages of the WWTP. This is mainly to ensure that the treated effluent meets the required discharge limits and also to know which parts of the WWTP are failing or need to be upgraded or refurbished.
Solution
Wolf Wasser proposed and installed online instruments in the client’s WWTP, the client is now able to monitor the following points remotely:
- Sludge bed level sensor at the Clarifier – to continuously monitor the sludge level in the clarifier.
- Effluent to the Activated Sludge Reactor(ASR) – the installed probe is currently monitoring TSS, pH, TDS COD remotely
- Aeration pond: the installed probes are monitoring the TSS, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Phosphates, Nitrates,
- Final Effluent(discharge point): the probes installed at this point are monitoring TSS, TDS, pH, Phosphates, Ammonia/Nitrates, Conductivity, COD & Dissolved Oxygen

The online instruments installed at this site are integrated into the client’s Modbus system, they are self-cleaning with high accuracy.
